13 Dec We Know Something Isn’t Right
Something strange is happening. Sexual deviants who have gone decades committing their crimes are suddenly being dragged out of the darkness and into the light. I keep asking myself, why now?
My wife reminded me that we just had the 100 year anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima, and this is probably all part of her plan. The great evil she warned about was the one that would destroy families, and now we are seeing the end of that evil (I’m hopeful). The triumph of the Immaculate Heart will mean the triumph of God’s plan for marriage – for all human sexuality reality. We are going to see amazing things happen.
I think it’s interesting, though, that the Weinstein barrel of gunpowder has exploded following the death of Hugh Hefner. My hypothesis is that the collective cultural conscience can’t take the dissonance between what we openly accept and what is true in the depths of our humanity. How many decades has the “casting couch” been an acceptable part of Hollywood? How many decades have people turned a blind eye to harassment and assault – including the victims? We’ve been allowing for these things to occur for too long.
Hefner was one of the original perpetrators, and as a culture, we lauded his “advancement of women’s rights.” It would be laughable if it wasn’t so sad how disgustingly ironic and contradictory this is. Hefner was celebrated with all the pomp and circumstance of a great man for mankind, yet he was a pathetic example of what happens when one directs sexual desire inwards with the vigor of 100 men instead of outwards as God created it. He used women while excusing himself in the name of sexual freedom.
Yet Hollywood, the media, and most of society praised him and consumed his handiwork. Despite the still, small voice that lives in the heart of every man and woman that says it is wrong to look at lust-inducing pictures of men and women because we are using them for our own pleasure – no matter how misguided those men and women are in letting the pictures be taken – we look. Something deep inside of us has been getting twisted up for a hundred years. It twisted until a man named Weinstein was pushed into the light, and then that thing snapped. With the fury of an entire ocean dammed up behind a gigantic wall letting loose, outrage and moral indignation have poured forth.
Little by little, the still small voice will have its day. God will be heard. We will stop looking at pornography, seeking help from others when necessary. We will stop using the birth control pill and therefore using women as objects of our desire. We will stop using each other for our own gratification- and that includes emotional as well as physical. We will stop misusing our sexuality in cheap ways that counterfeit its true purpose of making us like God. We will accept God’s love for us that recreates us through the Resurrection of His Son. This is the only acceptable response to the evil of Harvey Weinstein AND Hugh Hefner.
Come Lord Jesus.
